Ainori #301

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Ainori is a popular reality show in Japan, aired on Fuji TV on Monday nights at 23:00.

In August 2005, I discovered that Ainori was not only popular in Japan, but also all over the world thanks to Bit Torrent technology. I decided to write a summary of each episode, and do a translation of the weekly photo captions from the official site. What do I get out of this? I get to improve my Japanese, I get more traffic to my blog, but above all, I get the satisfaction of knowing many non-Japanese speakers all over the world can appreciate a truly unique reality show. Enjoy, and don’t hesitate to post any comments or questions you may have.

Ainori #301

WARNING! THIS IS A SPOILER!

Oh boy! There was so much going on this week, I don’t know where to start! Ok, first things first, let me introduce the new girl…

Hisayon Hisayo “Hisayon” Hasakawa, a 25 year old pastry chef from Gunma Prefecture. She’s very cute and cheerful, and I have a feeling she’ll be the light of the party. The message she wrote on her profile: “I’ll wrap you up in a sweet savor”. Well, so much for pastry! She brought the group some cake she had made herself, which I thought was a nice touch. She gave me a very good first impression, and I’m sure she’ll make an excellent participant.

Tagami

Izumi

Hisayon

At the beginning of this episode, Izumi and Tagami had their first private talk, away from the group, and Izumi seemed to have found Tagami pretty cute. When the group threw a little welcome party for Hisayon, she openly said that she thought Tagami was cute too, and that didn’t please Izumi at all, who started making sarcastic remarks about Hisayon’s age. Aaaah, the stage is set for a (maybe) not so friendly competition.

Mie

suuzan

And now guess what? Suuzan didn’t feel too good after wrestling with some of the natives (no worries, it was a friendly competition), and Mie was very nice to him, covering him with a blanket and taking care of him. It seems he started noticing what a nice girl Mie is, and it’s about time, if you ask me. Is he finally gonna come around? I certainly hope so, because I think they would make a really nice couple. Besides, it seems there’s nobody interested in either one of them for the time being, which means the way is wide open. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Alec

Izumi

Next, we have Alec, who somehow seems to be under the impression Izumi is getting interested in him. Good grief! This guy reminds me of TK when he was so sure Mie was after him… He better snap out of it real soon, because there will be no Mario to save the day if he keeps imagining things…

Outlaw

Izumi
And finally, we got to see Mr. Macho Man in action. There he was, with Izumi, immobilizing her against a fence and trying to kiss her from behind. What a creep! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, DUDE, YOU’RE NOT IN SHINJUKU ANYMORE!

Self-proclaimed Polygamist Arrested!

Unemployed polygamist / hypnotist
Japanese news have been all abuzz since last week over this case. Meet Hirohito Shibuya, a 57-year-old unemployed fortune-teller. Not exactly the type most women would be after, right? Try again! This guy was arrested for allegedly threatening one of his customers, apparently trying to coerce her into living with him and ten other women in Tokyo. These young women, most of them in their twenties, had supposedly been “hypnotized” into marrying and living with him, according to the suspect himself. Now, my question is why would he threaten any women, and why would he be unemployed if he had indeed such amazing “powers”? This guy would make a fortune teaching his technique to other men! Read about it here and here!

Explore the Universe at Home!

Monday, January 30th, 2006

I just found a kick-ass software called Celestia, allowing you to explore the Universe in 3-D. It’s intuitive, user-friendly, and highly addictive for anyone interested in astronomy. It is free and available at Celestia. You can download it here!

Happy New Year!

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

Today marks the beginning of the year of the dog (”inu doshi” here in Japan), according to the Chinese calendar. Happy New Year to everybody born under that sign! The year of the dog 2006 will end on February 17, 2007. Although you might have seen the chinese character on the left before, in Japan they actually use a completely different set of characters for the twelve animals. The one on the right is the one used in Japan.

Flowers of Vietnam

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

Yet another post about my trip to Vietnam. I’m not particularly fond of flowers, nor do I have any great interest in botany, but while I was over there, I don’t know what came over me, I just took lots of pictures of flowers. Unfortunately, I can’t name any of them (hey, hey, hey, NOT my field, ok!), but… I guess looking a their beauty, names are irrelevant. By the way, the flower behind the yellow and red one is definitely MY favorite. :-) Enjoy the flowers here!
