Ainori #291

Ainori is a popular reality show in Japan, aired on Fuji TV on Monday nights at 23:00.

In August 2005, I discovered that Ainori was not only popular in Japan, but also all over the world thanks to Bit Torrent technology. I decided to write a summary of each episode, and do a translation of the weekly photo captions from the official site. What do I get out of this? I get to improve my Japanese, I get more traffic to my blog, but above all, I get the satisfaction of knowing many non-Japanese speakers all over the world can appreciate a truly unique reality show. Enjoy, and don’t hesitate to post any comments or questions you may have.

Ainori #291

This week’s episode was pretty eventless, mainly because half of it was spent showing the director playing with his life exploring the vicinity of the Chernobyl accident BY HIMSELF, after it had been decided that it would be too risky for the group to enter the forbidden zone! Ah, well…

When I say the episode was pretty eventless, well, there was actually one important development: Arashi confessing to the staff that he wanted to declare his love to Aya as soon as possible. Yep, this thing is pretty much set. Are we going to finally come out of the slump? The last couple that formed on the program was Oose and Bukuro, which was like months ago! We’re definitely due for a new one…

Man, TK is getting deeper and deeper into his own little universe. He talked with Mie again, who tried to tell him she had someone (Suuzan) on her mind, and the guy his convinced she’s talking about him. He’s gonna fall from high and hard when the time comes… Poor guy, I really pity him. Even the staff made a pun on his name: TK = “Tondemonai Kanchigai”, which means something like “terrible mistake”, or “terrible misunderstanding”. Yep, sounds like him all right!

I’ve watched quite a few Japanese programs and even though I can’t understand what they’re saying (thank goodness for subtitles) I still find the shows very entertaining.

I’m looking forward to that special treat.

With every episode I like Suzan more and more. If I knew him in real life we’d probably get along great. Poor TK is in for a major crestfall though. Oh well, if he wants to be rich in the future he can probably find success in manzai because he’d make a fabulous boke.
