Ainori #294

  • ja

Ainori is a popular reality show in Japan, aired on Fuji TV on Monday nights at 23:00.

In August 2005, I discovered that Ainori was not only popular in Japan, but also all over the world thanks to Bit Torrent technology. I decided to write a summary of each episode, and do a translation of the weekly photo captions from the official site. What do I get out of this? I get to improve my Japanese, I get more traffic to my blog, but above all, I get the satisfaction of knowing many non-Japanese speakers all over the world can appreciate a truly unique reality show. Enjoy, and don’t hesitate to post any comments or questions you may have.

Ainori #294

Bad news people, Mie said NO! TK and her were standing in the pouring rain, and as she was trying to explain that she had mixed feelings about going back to Japan with him, he interrupted her to sing a love song at the top of his lungs. Unfortunately, it was no use, as she had made her decision. It think she might have refused his offer because she didn’t want him to be just a surrogate for Suuzan, and if it’s how she felt, maybe it’s better this way. I really wanted to see those two become a couple, not to mention the end of the abnormally long “couple slump” that’s been going on for months, but hey, that’s life… Poor TK couldn’t hold his pride very long, and broke in tears when he said goodbye to the rest of the group. At least he went home with the satisfaction that he knew he did all he had to do, all the way to the end…

After TK had gone, the group left Ukraine to enter Ainori’s 63rd country: Romania. And yes, Hide has broken the record of countries visited by a single member, 14! This guy has been on Ainori for one and a half year now, and by the looks of it, is not about to leave the show. Some of us are even starting to wonder if he’s not tagging along just for the free ride…

As it is the rule of Ainori, a new member joined the group to replace TK. Meet Alex, 28, a native of Nara Prefecture, of both Japanese and Italian descent. Although his father was Italian, he lived in Japan all his life and can’t speak Italian. He is a cram school teacher back in Japan. Nicknamed the “Blue-eyed handsome half”, the girls were REALLY excited when he joined the group, and the boys really looked worried. That should be interesting…

:-) Special treat for non-Japanese speakers :-)

Found out first on the Ainori official website. It’s sad… but no real love can grow from pity alone, so, in spite of everything, I have to admit MIE made the right choice. Poor TK, indeed poor him! Did his best from the very beginning and with the purest feelings, yet… well… Love’s life’s bittersweetest candy.
Now, in the case of ainori… it has begun to give viewers the impression that we, humans, tend to fall in love for the wrong person more often than we should. But the worst part is that that is probably right. Sigh… More than half a year and still no couples. Wonder if Ainori’s ever had a record as nefastous as this.
Now Alex… heh, let’s hope he doesen’t become another Kouji. Remember him? The seitoukaichou of his school, a popular and dashing rugby player whose looks could make dozens of women go “kyaaa!” like he was an SMAP member? Remember how that Aomori dumbwit Nacchi fell instead for a yaku ni tatanai uchuujin!? Could he be the bearer of the same symptom? Let’s hope not (not that uchuujin Arashi again, please God, not again!!).

Thanks a Lot sylvain for your weekley summary and the treat! i felt sorry for TK, but i think MIE was honest to her feeling and to TK’s. Alex looks cool! hope he’ll be able to notice the hidden charm in Ume-chan. she’s always in the shadow, i hope to see her shine more.

Poor tk… I was rooting for him too but it was kinda obvious she would say no, even though the producers tried their best to make it look like he had a chance. This new guy looks pretty interesting… the self proclaimed nippon ichi Gamer, haha… He sure makes all the other guys look ugly though. He also made all the girls forget about tk pretty quickly! tk what? who? gaijin you’re so hot~! (*´∀`)ノ

I was really sad to see TK go. As much of a doofus as he was, I thought the guy handled himself really well on the show and if he couldn’t win her over after all he did, well, it just wasn’t meant to be. Good luck back in Japan, TK!
Now I’m really interested to find out what the story with Ume-chan is… She’s been ignored the entire time on the show so far except for a few bits of clever kizukai and plenty of chances to point out her low self-esteem…

You’re right, looks ain’t everything, as Kouji proved it. Is it just me, or is Alec not very eloquent. At first I thought it was because he was a foreigner, but when he said he was a Japanese born and bred, I was a little surprised. Then again, I didn’t like Suuzan at all when he first came on the show, and now I think he’s the coolest. Only time will tell…

Yeah, no kidding! It’s a reaction I often get here in Japan – girls screaming “kakkoiiii” while literally jumping up and down just because I’m a foreigner (not that I dislike the reaction, mind you). But trust me, it’ll pass and Alex is gonna have to work his way up the ladder, too, although he does seem to have an advantage over the other guys.

Ouais, les deux mecs ils ont pas l’air de vouloir vraiment s’embarquer dans des romances, malgré que Suuzan est relativement nouveau, donc on pourrait lui laisser le bénéfice du doute. Hide est soit très intelligent ou très stupide!

I know what you mean with Umechan, but let’s not forget that it’s a 30 minute show, minus the commercials, the hosts’ talk, the intro and the next week’s preview, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for the actual footage. Umechan doesn’t seem to be meaningfully interacting with any of the guys while other plots are unfolding either, which is probably why she’s been left out of the spotlight since she came on the show. However, looking at the preview for next week, it seems they’ll start concentrating on her a bit. Let’s keep our fingers crossed…
